"Musings of a Medium"

"Why Can't I Manifest What I Want?"

We all know those folks that seem to have whatever they desire and not have to work too hard at it. They walk around either oblivious to this gift or they spout about "trusting the Universe to provide" or "giving to receive" or "timing is everything" or even better "be patient." Of course all of these statements have truth in them but how does one actually manifest what one wants, desires or needs? Just maybe, I think I might have figured it out.

According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law "Manifest" means "to make evident or certain by showing or displaying (manifesting the intent to make a gift)." How interesting that the words "intent" and "gift" are part of this definition. But where do they fit into manifesting our own personal desires? Isn't it enough to have the intent and what if it is not about giving away what we desire?

Intent is not enough. From my own experiences with manifesting I have learned that pure and clear intent is a necessary ingredient but action goes along with it. Doing a ritual, stating intention, stating desire, asking with love and compassion then sitting back and waiting for "it" to appear does not work. So often we believe that all we have to do is ask and it will be given. When what we ask for doesn't show up we lose confidence in ourselves and in the Universe thinking that we are not deserving or that the Universe is mad at us. We think that we need to be extra "good" or that we must have been "bad" since "it" hasn't shown up yet. So we whine to our understanding friends and commiserate with whoever will listen and empathize and ask the Universe "what more do you want from me." After all we are good people, we do our jobs, work hard, and are kind to others. We show love and compassion, do our spiritual work and wonder why I can't manifest what I want.

Okay, so there are a few "rules" or "laws" of the Universe that come into play here. Intention is one of them, energy exchange is another and of course self-love is a big one. Let's look at energy exchange for a second. That is the old "what goes around comes around" adage or "what you put out is what you get back" or the Witch's rule of three "what you do comes back to you threefold." However you want to say it, the bottom line is that our thoughts, words, and actions dictate what happens to us or what will come to us, whether we want it or not. All of those old thought tapes playing in our heads are energy vibrations spinning out into the Universe sending a message. Oftentimes the messages are negative and then the words spoken around those messages are negative and the actions from the spoken words are negative and so on and so on. We then sit back and wonder why all this negative stuff is happening to us. What did we do to deserve that? Well, we thought, spoke and sent out negative messages to the Universe, that's what we did. The Universe interpreted those negative vibrations as what we asked for. In order for us to manifest our desires we must change those negative thought patterns, which will then change our negative words and actions. Then the message the Universe receives from us is positive and truly what we desire. The Universe interprets those positive vibrations as what we asked for and sends us wondrous things. The problem with this is that it is not always easy to change those negative thought patterns. It is something we have to work at. Practicing affirmations work well for many, meditation, a yoga practice or something similar is also helpful. However you can do it, changing negative thought patterns swimming around in your head is part of how to manifest your desires.

Let's explore a bit the action that is required to manifest our desires. Action by definition denotes movement of some sort, movement of the body or the mind. Stating intent or doing ritual is action but what we forget is that it takes co-creation, action with another to bring about what we desire. Co-creation with whom, you ask. With Spirit, the Universal Consciousness, the Divine Source, Creator or whatever you wish to call it. For example, say you are asking for a house, you state a clear intention, you do a ritual and then you sit back and wait for the house to appear. NOT! What you do is state a clear intention, do a ritual, and then call a realtor to help with the search. That is co-creation. That is doing your part, doing your work around the request. If it is money that you need to buy the house, state a clear intention, do a ritual and then contact bankers, mortgage companies etc., clean up your credit record, do what you can to help. Do the work around what you want and the Universe will provide and it will come in a magnificent way. We are not in this world alone, we are here with the Divine Source, a Source that is assisting us and guiding us every step of the way. This Source is not a slave to our desires, we must do our part, do our work to manifest what we desire. That is co-creation.

How about the self-love part in all of this? The "I want this but do I deserve it" part of the equation. That can be a very difficult piece in manifesting. Many of us say that we deserve but deep, deep down inside we doubt that we are deserving beings. We don't love ourselves enough to allow the Universe to give us what we want. We think we are flawed and therefore not loveable or deserving. We think "I am too old, too fat, too ugly, too (you fill in the blank) to deserve good things. The truth of it is that we are all deserving. We are all perfect beings put here by Creator to serve our life purpose. In order to perform our life purpose, we deserve to have what we need and desire to fulfill that destiny, that life purpose. The Universe wants us to be successful, to be happy, and to be at peace and in harmony so that we can live out that life purpose. There is more than enough for all no matter what it is that we desire or need. Love yourself, forgive yourself of those flaws (imagined or real) and truly believe that you are a perfect being that deserves happiness, success, peace and harmony and then allow the Universe to provide. Once the Universe fills those desires, accept it with love and gratitude as the perfect, deserving being that you are.

All right, I have to bring this up - trust and patience. After stating your intent, doing ritual, co-creating, and allowing, you then have to trust the Universe to bring you what is best for you and have the patience to wait for the right time. Much of the time we think we know what is best for ourselves and we want that right now. We don't want to wait. What comes to my mind is the time that I needed a new car and I had no money to buy one. I set out my intent "I need a new car. A VW Beetle would be nice, with automatic, green and affordable." I said. I did the ritual (burned the green candle, wrote out the intent etc.) and contacted a friend that worked at a car dealership and let him know I was looking but couldn't afford a lot. About a year passed and I was just about ready to give up when I got a call from my friend. He had gotten in a VW Beetle did I want to come look at it. I went and it wasn't exactly what I had asked for (it was red and a standard) but the price was right. However I learned I needed a bit more money for a down payment than I had. I trusted that the Universe did not bring me this opportunity for me to lose it. So I set my intent again, prayed and when I got home that night there was a check in the mail from a person that had owed me money. It was enough for the down payment and I got the car. What I learned from this was that it takes patience, trust and faith that the Universe will bring you what you desire/need when it is time and in the manner that is best for you. Not necessarily in the way that you expect or you think it should be. It is what is best for you.

What I learned and experienced about manifesting my desires, in a nutshell, is: (1) set clear intention; (2) do ritual (if you want); (3) have positive thoughts, words and actions; (4) know and believe that you are deserving (5) co-create; (6) trust; (7) have patience; (8) express gratitude for what you receive and (9) share what you have.

Ah yes, giving/sharing. A spiritual teacher of mine once said to me "the more you give the happier you will be and the longer you will live." That does not mean you have to give everything you have away. But from my experience what it does mean is that giving and sharing what you have from heartfelt love and compassion brings you joy, happiness, peace and harmony. What a wonderful way to live, to walk your path and to co-create. Happy manifesting!
